Nowhere Else on Earth ~ Standing Tall for the Great Bear Rainforest
By Caitlyn Vernon
Orca Book Publishers 2011 (for 10 years old +)
Massive Douglas firs and Sitka spruce live in the Great Bear Rainforest in British Columbia. So also can be found 2000 year-old western red and yellow cedars which can be as wide as 6 metres in diameter. Tragically in 1902 a 126-metre Douglas fir, 38 storeys high was chopped down. Vernon shows the relationship of this ancient forest with other living things ~ salmon, wolves, bears, humans, birds etc. and their interdependence. Vernon’s story is a page-turner in that she includes many photos, illustrations, informative facts, eco-stories from Canadian citizens old and young and action plans for saving this magnificent part of our world.
